An Animal Control officer and member of the Yorktown Police Department were dispatched to Crompond Road at approximately 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24, where there was a report of an unattended dog that had been left in a car.
Upon arrival, police said that the officers found a small brown and white dog inside a parked, unattended vehicle in an area parking lot. The car was in direct sunlight, and officers measured the temperature at 80 degrees, while the inside of the car was found to be 105 degrees.
Police said the dog was found without water, panting heavily and in distress. Officers were able to gain access to the car, removed the dog and placed it in an air conditioned police cruiser. He was then taken to the Yorktown Animal Hospital by the Animal Control Officer, where it was evaluated and treated.
Investigators later tracked down the dog’s owner, Country Club Hills, Ill. resident Kawanie Williams-Bevis, 22, who has been charged with endangering the health and welfare of the dog by leaving it in the unattended car.
On Aug. 25, Williams-Bevis turned himself in at the Yorktown Police Headquarters, where he was charged with confinement of an animal in a motor vehicle, a violation. He has since been released and is due back in Yorktown Justice Court on Sept. 20 to answer the charge.
